Dave MacDonald recorded the King Cobra’s first-ever victory here at the 1963 LA Times Grand Prix at Riverside International Raceway. Race sponsors attracted world class drivers to this event by offering not only a record purse, but also a sparkling new 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix to the winner. Marquee drivers and a month long media blitz by the Los Angeles Times brought out the largest crowd ever for an American road racing event and 85000 fans saw local favorite Dave MacDonald dominate a star-studded international lineup. Racing champions AJ Foyt, Jimmy Clark, Rodger Ward, Parnelli Jones, Graham Hill, Jim Hall, Pedro Rodriguez, Dan Gurney, Bob Bondurant, John Surtees, Billy Krause, Dick Thompson, Walt Hansgen, Augie Pabst, Lloyd Ruby, Don Wester, Bob Holbert, Richie Ginther and Roger Penske were no match for Dave that day as he won in spectacular fashion – finishing 1+ laps ahead of the entire 31 car field. 1962 winner Roger Penske finished 2nd, Mexico’s Pedro Rodriquez 3rd, England’s John Surtees 4th & Scotland’s Jimmy Clark, the 1963 World Driving Champion, placed 5th in a Lotus MacDonald piloted the Shelby King Cobra to an equally impressive victory the following week in the Monterey Pacific Grand Prix at Laguna Seca Raceway. The Monster Energy Grand Prix of France 2011 saw some of the most intense racing we’ve seen this season and one hell of a party as Monster brought the biggest public hospitality ever to MotoGP. Over the weekend pretty much 100000 people soaked up the atmosphere which included FMX demos, signing sessions with fans, intense music sets and of course, the Monster Girls chilling in our hot tubs. On the track Casey Stoner made the Honda dominance count but it was Valentino Rossi’s first podium on his Ducati that made the headlines. Check out the racing and all the action from an epic weekend.
