Geek shirts are becoming popular nowadays. You would likely see people, young and old, walking down the street sporting shirts with prints that say, “It Must Be User Error” or “Obey Gravity, It’s Law”. And it is not only limited to men. Ladies are also embracing this type of get-up, so you won’t be surprised if the sexy chick waiting in line next to you wears “Talk Nerdy To Me” shirt.

What Is A Geek?

The word “geek” originally refers to the performers in a carnival whose act includes biting the heads off chickens and eating glass to entertain people. After a while, a person who got paid to do work considered odd or out of the ordinary by mainstream society also referred to as a geek.

A geek used to have a negative connotation. It’s not something you want to be called decades ago, I’m sure. But, after years of ridicule and never getting the girls out, geeks these days are hot. The term has become more complimentary, denoting extra ordinary skills within particular fields particularly in the technical field.  Computer programmers, for instance, think highly of the term because it gives them special status within the computing community.  

Geek Chic

Over the years, some geeks have developed a geek culture, such as geek humor and obscure references on T-shirts. Geek chic refers to the breaking of traditional fashion rules and taking up of stereotypically not so popular geek characteristics such as thick glasses, plastic pocket protectors, computer video games, and floodwater pants.

Why Wear A Geek Shirt

Geek shirts have come a long way since its first entrance to the fashion world. High tech people often find themselves enjoying special status by how obscure the logo on their T-shirt is.  The rarer the logo or saying, the better.  It gives them some sense of pride in wearing a T-shirt that is relatively rare but that real geeks can identify and admire.

The T-shirt is the cornerstone of the tech geek’s attire. Some may see T-shirt as an anti-status symbol, but for the geeks, geek T-shirts project a knowledgeable person who knows that what is inside his head is more important than what is on his back.

Today’s geek shirts are smart and elegant, with stylish graphic designs and cool, clever sayings like, “Life would be easier if I had the source code,” “Hacker Inside,” and “There’s no place like 127.0.0.1”. Being a geek is fashionable. Just because you are a gamer or a geek doesn’t mean you should dress like a dork. Wear a geek shirt and be proud that you are a geek.
