Question by Katie: Too much O’reilly Factor……?
I recently read this excerpt from Media Matters, a media watchdog Organization… I would like your feedback:
During the May 23 edition of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly asserted that “[m]any Americans ages 18 to 24 have no idea what’s going on,” stating that they “get their news from [Comedy Central host] Jon Stewart and their point of view from bomb-throwing entertainers.” In fact, studies have shown that viewers of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are consistently better informed about current events than consumers of other media, and Daily Show viewers are considerably better educated than viewers of The O’Reilly Factor. Further, consumers of Fox News in general have been found to be significantly more misinformed about current events than consumers of other mainstream media.
During the June 14 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Bill O’Reilly again baselessly attacked viewers of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, calling them “dopey college kids” who must be “stoned” to watch the program. In fact, as Media Matters for America has previously noted, a study by the Annenberg Public Policy Center indicates that Daily Show viewers are consistently better informed about current events than consumers of other media, while Nielsen Media Research statistics demonstrate that Daily Show viewers are more educated and affluent than the viewers of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor.

Responding to a segment on the June 13 broadcast of The Daily Show during which host Jon Stewart satirized O’Reilly’s recent trip to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, O’Reilly suggested that Abu Bakar Bashir — the extremist religious leader recently released from prison where he was serving time for his role in the 2002 Bali terrorist attacks — could “bunk with” Stewart “when he comes to the USA.” O’Reilly then characterized his own “program” as “serious” — as opposed to Stewart’s “comedy show” — and asserted that while being “a smart guy,” Stewart has taken to pandering to the “[d]opey college kids” who “are gonna watch him.”

Question by Faith: Question for teens – a few math class questions?
I picked this category knowing that teens would be able to help me with my questions.

I’m finishing up planning my 14yr old daughters homeschool year.

I’m a homeschooling mom and I’ve heard that some schools allow their students to use calculators in math. I’ve heard some even require it. They allow the calculators to be used for classwork, homework and even tests.

I’ve heard this from friends who kids are in school plus a few teachers tell me the same thing.

For those of you who are jr high or highschool do you use a calculator?

I’m not talking about those science calculators, just a basic one that adds, subtracts, divides & multiplies.

Are 14 yr old kids in public or private school taught to do mental math (math you do in your head or on paper) or do you just use calculators.

I know as adult I rarely write down math problems to work out on paper. It is so much easier to use a calculator or the computer.

I can also honestly say that most of the math that is required for students to learn may never be used in your daily life or job.

Do your teachers ask you to “show” your work and how you got your answers for homework or tests?

as you may know I’d like only serious answers.

thank you in advance for taking time to help
thank you all for your quick answers. Very helpful.

No idea how I will pick best answer. I’ll leave that up to votes.

Answer by MissChérie!
yes, though it is limited use though. Some pieces of work we aren’t allowed to use calculators, but they are parts when we are allowed to. Or when we are given those lessons using them

we are only allowed to use scientific calculators in mine, but we mostly use it for use of a simple calculator anyways

Question by MeMeMe: Your opinion on the UK racism row?
Heard about the row on the UK television show” Big Brother”? Apparently the other housemates are bullying and passing racist remarks on the Indian celebrity Shilpa Shetty. It was a huge row for a few days and now they’ve kissed and made up…is UK really racist? Many Asians have alleged the this is true…has the Shilpa incident has just highlighted something that happens on a daily basis to foreigners there?

Answer by janjanw2000
Definately not, you cant judge a whole nation on three bitchy girls on a tv programme. Thats why thousands and thousands of british people jammed the phone lines to complain about their embarrassing behaviour and rightly so. I cant say if it was racist or not but it is definately bullying and those three girls should be ashamed of themselves when they come out to face the music. I agree with the companies which they are associated with are dropping them, we are all behind shilpa in britain, and jade will be thrown out the house tonight.

Question by Lisa m: Prince’s halftime imagery questioned. Do you think its just unhappy people looking for negativity?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070207/ap_en_ce/prince_super_bowl_9

NEW YORK – In the sensitive post-wardrobe malfunction world, some are questioning whether a guitar was just a guitar during Prince’s Super Bowl halftime show.

Prince’s acclaimed performance included a guitar solo during the “Purple Rain” segment of his medley in which his shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. As the 48-year-old rock star let rip, the silhouette cast by his figure and his guitar (shaped like the singer’s symbol) had phallic connotations for some.

A number of bloggers have decried “Malfunction!” — including Sam Anderson at New York magazine’s Daily Intelligencer. Daily News television critic David Bianculli called it “a rude-looking shadow show” that “looked embarrassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed.”
